West Virginia disabled veteran benefits: tax, plates, education, and recreation.

A source-visible guide to the West Virginia fields used in the VetOps State Benefits Report. Verify final eligibility with the state agency before relying on any benefit.

West Virginia exempts military retirement and deducts up to $8,000 of other income at 65+ — treated as exempt here.

    Registration, parking, and toll notes

No registration fee for one plate — but you still pay a 50¢ insurance enforcement fee + $1/year litter fee.

No dedicated disabled-veteran toll program confirmed in West Virginia.

    West Virginia property tax benefits

West Virginia provides a refundable income-tax credit for eligible homestead taxes actually paid on time, not an upfront full property-tax exemption. Current law, amended June 12, 2026, includes honorable discharge plus a 90% or greater service-connected rating or VA individual-unemployability eligibility. Older forms still use narrower wording: confirm year-specific treatment with the Tax Division. File the correct-year DV-1 with IT-140 and required receipts; do not also claim SCTC or HEPTC.

    West Virginia education benefits

Eligible WV Medal of Honor/Purple Heart recipients can request an undergraduate tuition/mandatory-fee waiver, with aid offsets and an eight-semester limit. Re-education Assistance is discretionary; confirm funding. The old War Orphan law was repealed in 2025.

    West Virginia recreation benefits

Qualifying resident P&T veterans, former POWs and veterans under the certified vehicle-fee exemption route may receive free wildlife privileges after the applicable certification process. Carry the issued privilege card and confirm additional permits. The separate Veterans Salute park offer is 10% off eligible stays, not free camping.
