State veteran benefits guide

Florida disabled veteran benefits: tax, plates, education, and recreation.

A source-visible guide to the Florida fields used in the VetOps State Benefits Report. Verify final eligibility with the state agency before relying on any benefit.

    Florida military retirement pay tax

Florida has no state income tax. Military retirement pay is not taxed by the state.

    Florida disabled veteran license plate

Eligibility: 100% total & permanent SC disability rating (VA or branch of service), OR received VA financial assistance for a specially adapted vehicle (Fla. Stat. §320.084).

How to apply: FL Dept. of Veterans’ Affairs 100% P&T ID Card OR VA Benefit Summary Letter, at your county Tax Collector/license plate agency.

Agency: County Tax Collector office — NOT the state DMV; Florida processes DV plates at the county level

    Registration, parking, and toll notes

One free set of DV plates; exempt from public (government) parking fees statewide.

TWO separate programs: (1) NEW as of July 1, 2025: 100% VA disability rating or 100% disability retirement pay = toll exemption — contact FDOT for enrollment. (2) Existing SunPass Disability Program: for people who physically CANNOT use toll baskets due to upper-limb impairment, certified by a physician or the VA Adjudication Office — not automatic from the 100% rating alone. Apply at sunpass.com or 1-888-865-5352.

    Florida property tax benefits

Tax year 2026: qualifying permanent-and-total service-connected disability may exempt homestead ad valorem taxes. A separate qualifying 10%+ disability exemption reduces property value by $5,000, not the tax bill by $5,000. Veterans age 65 or older with permanent combat-related disability have a separate discount path. Apply to the county property appraiser; category, residency, and filing requirements still apply.

    Florida education benefits

C.W. Bill Young can remove the out-of-state surcharge for qualifying veterans physically living in Florida; resident tuition still applies. CSDDV separately assists eligible dependent children/spouses, subject to FDVA certification, school requirements and funding. Confirm statutory residency alternatives and the correct award year with OSFA.

    Florida recreation benefits

September 2026 review: honorably discharged Florida resident veterans with 50%+ service-connected disability may obtain a free five-year FWC hunting/fishing license. Return after approval to obtain the license. The free military park entrance pass uses separate proof and in-person issuance; neither benefit covers every permit or camping fee.
