State veteran benefits guide

Colorado disabled veteran benefits: tax, plates, education, and recreation.

A source-visible guide to the Colorado fields used in the VetOps State Benefits Report. Verify final eligibility with the state agency before relying on any benefit.

    Colorado military retirement pay tax

Colorado excludes military retirement, plus up to $24,000 of other retirement income at 65+ ($20,000 at 55-64) — treated as exempt here.

    Colorado disabled veteran license plate

Eligibility: VA verification of a permanent SC disability rated 50%+, OR loss/permanent loss of use of one or both feet, OR one or both hands.

How to apply: Form DR 2002, the Disabled Veteran Plate Checklist and VA letter, at your local county DMV office.

    Registration, parking, and toll notes

First plate set fee-exempt; free admission to any CO state park/rec area.

No dedicated disabled-veteran toll program confirmed in Colorado.

    Colorado property tax benefits

Tax year 2026: qualifying permanent 100% disability or VA-granted individual unemployability can exempt 50% of the first $200,000 of primary-residence value, not 50% of the entire tax bill. Apply to the county assessor. The July 1 regular and August 1 good-cause late deadlines have passed; ask about the next application cycle or any remaining remedy.

    Colorado education benefits

Colorado Guard members may qualify for a tuition waiver at designated public colleges after applicable aid. It is not an unlimited benefit for every disabled veteran. A separate, narrower DTAP program assists eligible dependents; the broader SB26-067 dependent waiver proposal did not become law.

    Colorado recreation benefits

September 2026 review: qualifying Colorado residents with compensated 50%+ service-connected disability or a Purple Heart can apply to CPW for a free lifetime fishing or small-game/fishing license. The Independence park pass is a separate product. Obtain the issued credentials; species permits, park-pass renewal and camping conditions remain separate.
