How to apply: Form MVR-33A Section 3 + DD-214 + VA Rating Letter/Summary of Benefits (dated within 1 year), certified at a County/State Veterans Service Office.

North Carolina property tax benefits
2026: Qualifying permanent-and-total service-connected disability or specially adapted housing benefits can exclude the first $45,000 of home appraised value, not $45,000 from the tax bill. No age or income limit applies. Obtain VSO certification on NCDVA-9, then submit BOTH NCDVA-9 and AV-9 to the county assessor. The June 1, 2026 deadline has passed; late approval for good cause is discretionary and limited to the filing calendar year. Initial approval generally continues without annual reapplication while eligibility is unchanged.
North Carolina education benefits
North Carolina's Children of Wartime Veterans Scholarship is for qualifying children, not a blanket veteran tuition waiver. Fall 2026 is closed to new applicants. Award class, school and funding determine covered costs; military in-state tuition exceptions are separate.
North Carolina recreation benefits
Qualifying North Carolina residents with 50%+ VA disability can buy discounted lifetime licenses, not free statewide licenses. The current form lists $15 basic options, $131 Sportsman or $144 Sportsman/Coastal, plus a $5 transaction charge. A separate veteran exemption applies only in designated Mountain Heritage Trout Waters. Eligible park campsites have a $6 nightly veteran discount.
