State veteran benefits guide

Missouri disabled veteran benefits: tax, plates, education, and recreation.

A source-visible guide to the Missouri fields used in the VetOps State Benefits Report. Verify final eligibility with the state agency before relying on any benefit.

    Missouri military retirement pay tax

Military retirement pay is exempt from Missouri income tax.

    Missouri disabled veteran license plate

Eligibility: MO resident, honorably discharged, ANY service-connected disability — no minimum percentage required (unusually generous).

How to apply: Form 4601 + VA Summary of Benefits Letter (dated within 6 months) + DD-214, at any license office, online at mydmv.mo.gov, or by mail.

Agency: Dept. of Revenue (license offices)

    Registration, parking, and toll notes

One free set of plates (no specialty/transfer/processing/replacement fees); the personalization fee is also waived. Parking is NOT automatic — must request the wheelchair-symbol variant with a physician’s statement (Form DOR-1776).

No dedicated disabled-veteran toll program confirmed in Missouri.

    Missouri property tax benefits

Reviewed September 2026: no blanket full exemption for every 100% rating. The income-tested 2025 Property Tax Credit is up to $1,100 for homeowners or $750 for renters; a claim remains possible within three years of its original due date. Higher limits apply to tax year 2026, not the 2025 form. File with Missouri DOR; the separate former-POW exemption requires total service-connected disability.

    Missouri education benefits

Missouri Returning Heroes reduces qualifying combat-veteran tuition; it is not limited to post-9/11 service. Guard STA and the separate public-school tuition-and-fee waiver have different limits, including waiver restrictions effective August 28, 2026. Campus and Guard approval are required.

    Missouri recreation benefits

Qualifying veterans with 60%+ service-related disability, former POWs and specified military patients may fish and hunt small game without basic permits; carry required proof. Species permits, trout tags and waterfowl requirements remain. State Parks separately offers a $2 nightly military camping discount, not free camping.
