State veteran benefits guide

Maine disabled veteran benefits: tax, plates, education, and recreation.

A source-visible guide to the Maine fields used in the VetOps State Benefits Report. Verify final eligibility with the state agency before relying on any benefit.

    Maine military retirement pay tax

Maine exempts military retirement and up to $48,216 of other pension/retirement income — treated as exempt here.

    Maine disabled veteran license plate

Eligibility: 100% SC (total & permanent) disability rating, receiving VA compensation.

How to apply: Mail or in person at a Maine BMV office (207-624-9000).

Agency: Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV)

    Registration, parking, and toll notes

No registration fee (vehicles under 26,000 lbs). Veterans who lost/lost use of both legs get a broader exemption: excise tax, sales tax, registration, and title fees all waived.

Real program: the Maine Turnpike Authority waives tolls for veterans who qualify for Maine’s disability-based property tax exemption — the same underlying eligibility test, not a separate toll-specific one. A windshield placard confirms toll-waived status.

    Maine property tax benefits

September 2026 review: qualifying veterans receive a $6,000 just-value exemption, adjusted by the local assessment ratio, not a full exemption for every 100% rating. A separate $50,000 category requires qualifying federal specially adapted housing assistance and disability status. File with the assessor by April 1; the 2026 deadline has passed. The Property Tax Fairness Credit is a separate income-tax filing.

    Maine education benefits

Maine VDEB waives eligible tuition and mandatory/lab fees for qualifying spouses and children at participating public schools, subject to family, residence, age and credit limits. Apply through the Bureau's current online form and complete FAFSA/Pell and school requirements. Room and board are not covered.

    Maine recreation benefits

Veterans with 50%+ service-connected disability and qualifying Maine/reciprocal-state residency may receive a free lifetime hunting/fishing license. Maine's separate 100% disabled-veteran camping benefit requires BMV proof and camping-list approval.
