Montana disabled veteran benefits: tax, plates, education, and recreation.

A source-visible guide to the Montana fields used in the VetOps State Benefits Report. Verify final eligibility with the state agency before relying on any benefit.

    Montana military retirement pay tax

Montana offers a partial military retirement exclusion — treated as exempt here.

    Montana disabled veteran license plate

Eligibility: Awarded the Purple Heart AND rated 50%+ disabled for a service-connected injury, OR currently rated (or paid at) 100% disabled (MCA 61-3-458).

How to apply: Apply through the MVD.

    Agency: Motor Vehicle Division

    Registration, parking, and toll notes

Fees waived. The DV plate itself entitles the veteran to the parking privileges of a special parking permit — no separate placard needed.

No dedicated disabled-veteran toll program confirmed in Montana.

    Montana property tax benefits

Tax year 2026: qualifying veterans rated or paid at 100% for service-connected disability may receive an income-based tax-rate reduction on a primary home occupied at least seven months a year. The 2026 application uses 2024 income. Apply through Montana DOR, not the county treasurer. The April 15 deadline has passed; later applications are considered for the following year.

    Montana recreation benefits

September 2026 review: Montana offers a certified resident-disability license discount, a separate Purple Heart fishing/upland-bird route, and limited sponsored hunts. A 100% VA rating does not provide a blanket free hunting/fishing license. Resident-veteran camping discounts exclude electricity and reservation fees; confirm each program with FWP.
