Eligibility: At least 50% disability resulting from military service.
How to apply: In person at an OMV office: vehicle registration copy + VA affidavit of eligibility.

Registration, parking, and toll notes
Plate is free (local transaction fee may apply). Same privileges as mobility-impairment plates; can also request a free portable hang tag usable in any vehicle.
Real statutory program (La. R.S. 29:27): free passage AND free parking on state/parish toll bridges, toll ferries, and government-owned parking facilities — for the veteran, vehicle, and passengers. One carve-out: does NOT apply to the Crescent City Connection in New Orleans, which is named exclusions in the statute.
Louisiana property tax benefits
September 2026 review: 50-69% service-connected disability adds $2,500 of assessed value to the $7,500 homestead exemption; 70-99% adds $4,500. VA service-connected total disability or unemployability at 100% can exempt the remaining qualifying homestead assessment. Certain municipal taxes or fees may remain. Apply to the parish assessor; the proposed survivor transfer is not current eligibility.

Louisiana education benefits
Louisiana Title 29 supports eligible military children, spouses and survivors through parish approval and a school certificate. Guard STEP tuition and Patriot undergraduate fee benefits use a separate eligibility roster. Some disabled veterans using less than full Chapter 33 eligibility may qualify for the separate Act 224 tuition/fee exemption.
Louisiana recreation benefits
Resident and nonresident veterans with permanent 50%+ service-connected disability may receive free hunting/fishing licenses; renew annually as directed by LDWF. Federal Duck Stamp is separate. Apply separately for the 50%+ disabled-veteran park day-use pass.
