State veteran benefits guide

Iowa disabled veteran benefits: tax, plates, education, and recreation.

A source-visible guide to the Iowa fields used in the VetOps State Benefits Report. Verify final eligibility with the state agency before relying on any benefit.

    Iowa military retirement pay tax

Iowa exempts retirement income for those 55+ — military pension and TSP are state-tax-free.

    Iowa disabled veteran license plate

Eligibility: Tied to having received VA Title 38 §3901-3904 vehicle/adaptive-equipment financial assistance — NOT a flat percentage. A separate PWD placard system exists for general disability parking (VA determination accepted in lieu of a medical statement).

How to apply: DD-214 + VA documentation of the §3901-3904 assistance, to the Motor Vehicle Division, Iowa DOT.

Agency: Iowa DOT, Motor Vehicle Division (via county treasurer)

    Registration, parking, and toll notes

Registration fee waived for the qualifying vehicle; free city-owned/metered parking statewide (since 2022) — but not reserved/handicap spaces (needs the separate PWD placard).

No dedicated disabled-veteran toll program confirmed in Iowa.

    Iowa property tax benefits

Qualifying permanent 100% service-connected or permanent-and-total IU veterans, and specified survivors, may receive a homestead tax credit. Applications on or after July 1, 2026 are limited to one-half acre without appurtenances; earlier applications retain prior acreage rules. File both 54-049 and 54-028 with the assessor. After July 1, filing applies to the following assessment year, not immediate bill relief.

    Iowa education benefits

Iowa National Guard undergraduate INGSS has a $9,572 maximum for 2026-27, coordinated with eligible Federal Tuition Assistance, enrollment and available entitlement. Annual FAFSA/IFAA and term certification are required. Military resident-tuition pricing is a separate campus review, not free college.

    Iowa recreation benefits

Qualifying Iowa resident veterans can apply once for a $7 annual hunting/fishing license, then purchase it each year. Qualifying service-connected disabled veterans use a separate $7 lifetime-license application; no 100% threshold is stated. Hunter education, additional fees/tags and park reservations remain separate.
