Decision-letter scenario

Questions about your VA decision letter

Find the sentence in your letter that you need explained, then choose the matching situation below. Each guide shows which records to compare and what question to ask next. Topics include a proposed rating reduction, disputed work hours, missing benefit information, and exam reports. These are guides to reading documents; the original case records and outcomes have not been verified.

Private veteran-built platform. VetOps is not VA, a VSO, or a government agency. Educational information, not legal or medical advice.

Do this next: compare the letter with your records

Choose the sentence you disagree with. Check whether VA denied a connection to service, assigned a rating you dispute, or proposed lowering an existing rating. Those questions call for different records and next steps.

    • Copy the issue, decision date, and the sentence you need explained.
    • Locate the supporting record and its date or page number.
    • Note whether the record was already submitted or would be new.
    • Keep the review-rights or response instructions with those notes.

After HLR: understand the letter and complete the next task

Favorable findings plus a DTA return helps you list facts VA accepts and questions it still needs answered. Use the DTA evidence guide when your immediate question concerns a request, upload, or exam.

For the broader choice between review options, use the decision-review comparison and the appeals comparison.

Questions about your exam or its written report

Use the C&P preparation guide for appointment and record preparation. The PTSD DBQ scenario helps you identify what a decision says about a report. Condition guides and information about possible links between conditions are in the C&P tool.

Can someone else’s experience answer my question?

It can suggest what to check, but your letter and records must supply the answer. For example, if someone mentions a missing report, look for that report on your own evidence list before assuming the same thing happened. These pages contain no verified case outcomes or typical wait times.

If a letter raises clear and unmistakable error (CUE), bring the complete decision to an accredited representative. That is a special challenge to a final decision; have the representative check whether it applies.

    Common questions

    Are these verified case reports?

No. They organize questions raised by reported situations. Original case records and final outcomes have not been verified, and the scenario pages remain drafts.

What if my situation does not fit one of the six?

Start with the decision-review comparison. Match the reason for the decision and the evidence you have, even when the condition differs from these examples.

Does VetOps file or represent my claim?

No. Use the checklists to get ready. File through VA, or ask an accredited representative to help you file and speak for you.
