Decide what you are ready to submit
BDD is a claim you submit before discharge during its filing window. An Intent to File tells VA you plan to apply later and can protect a possible benefit start date while you gather records. It is not the completed claim.
When BDD may fit
Check BDD if you are 180 to 90 days from separation and can meet the records and exam requirements. Start with your orders and treatment records; confirm your exam availability with VA.
When Intent to File may matter
If you need time to gather records, check whether an Intent to File fits the benefit you plan to claim. VA generally requires the completed application within 1 year to use that possible start date. It does not extend the BDD filing window.
Record the dates you need to track
Write down your separation date, the date VA receives any Intent to File, and the deadline for the completed application. Keep the confirmation with your records. Ask VA or an accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) representative about your filing options if a date or requirement is unclear.
